9 volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic, crater lakes and whales
The Azores archipelago, made up of 9 volcanic islands scattered across the North Atlantic halfway between Europe and America, is one of Europe's most spectacular and least-known destinations. An autonomous Portuguese territory, it captivates with the raw power of its nature: emerald-coloured crater lakes (Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo), the geysers and hot springs of Furnas, caldera-edge vineyards on Pico, and black lava cliffs plunging into the Atlantic. São Miguel, nicknamed the Green Island, is the largest and most visited. Pico is home to Portugal's highest peak (2,351 m), whose lava-walled vineyards are UNESCO-listed. Faial, Terceira, Flores and Corvo complete an archipelago where sperm whales and dolphins share protected sanctuary waters. The Azores are also Europe's paradise for surfing and whale watching.
