When to visit Zanzibar?
The best time, month by month

Indian Ocean · 2026 advice

White-sand beaches, 27°C turquoise water, the spice-scented lanes of Stone Town… Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania, ticks every box of the tropical dream. But the island lives to the rhythm of two rainy seasons: best to choose your dates wisely. Here is our calendar.

☀️ The dry season (June to October) — glorious weather

From June to October, the trade winds sweep the humidity away: blue skies, 25 to 29°C, a 25-26°C sea and superb light. This is THE ideal period, whether for sunbathing at Nungwi, diving the reefs of Mnemba or kitesurfing on the Paje lagoon.

Another golden window: January-February, between the two rainy seasons. It is hotter (30-32°C) and the sea climbs to 29-30°C — perfect if you are fleeing the European winter.

🌧️ The rainy seasons — know before you book

The "long rains" (masika) fall from March to May: long downpours, maximum humidity, and some hotels close. This is the period to avoid, even though prices melt away.

The "short rains" from November to mid-December are gentler: brief showers, often late in the day, dazzling vegetation and attractive rates. A smart move for tight budgets happy to pack a folding umbrella.

The best time for Zanzibar: June to October, peaking in July-September.

January-February is a superb alternative for an extended Christmas in the sun or a shorter winter.

Once there, don't miss Stone Town (UNESCO), a spice tour and a sunset dhow cruise. And if the Indian Ocean calls, follow up with our other favourite islands!
