Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is often seen as an expensive destination. Yet with a few smart moves, it is entirely possible to travel there on a controlled budget while enjoying the island to the full.

✈️ Finding cheap flights
Tenerife (TFS or TFN airport) is served all year round by low-cost flights from most major European cities. Vueling, Transavia, Ryanair and EasyJet regularly offer return fares under €100.

Apartments and rentals
Apartment rentals via Airbnb or Booking are often cheaper than hotels. In the villages of the north (La Orotava, Garachico, Icod de los Vinos), rates are noticeably lower than in the tourist areas of the south.
Avoid the tourist hotspots
Los Cristianos, Playa de Las Américas and Costa Adeje have the highest prices. Go instead for Santa Cruz (the capital), La Laguna (UNESCO-listed) or Puerto de la Cruz for more affordable places to stay.
🍽️ Eating local without overspending
Skip the restaurants along the tourist promenade. Local tapas bars serve full meals for €8-12. Look for the "menú del día" (menu of the day): starter + main + dessert + drink for €10-13 in local restaurants.
Must-tries: papas arrugadas (salt-wrinkled potatoes) with mojo rojo or verde, caldo de papas, gofio and freshly grilled fish.
🎒 Free or nearly free activities
✅ Teide — The volcano is freely accessible up to the Teide car park (2,200 m). The cable car (€28) is optional.
✅ Masca — The cliff-hugging village can be reached by bus.
✅ La Laguna — UNESCO historic centre to explore on foot, free entry.
✅ Anaga — Protected laurel forest with free hiking trails.
✅ Public beaches — All of Tenerife's beaches are free.
