A kilometre of white sand protected by the Conservatoire du littoral, turquoise water that warms quickly on the rising tide and yachts at anchor: the most photographed beach in Morbihan.

The full loop strings together En Tal and Beg er Vachif points, the coves of Porh Halai and Tréac'h Salus and the heathland where seabirds nest. No shade: hat and water essential.

Houat Location (Véloc'Ouest) hires bikes at the landing stage from 9 am to 6 pm, April to September: ideal for reaching the south-west beaches without a two-hour walk.

The former eco-museum, now a museum-shop, explains island life, fishing and plankton in an old hatchery. €4 entry, open year-round except Mondays off season.

The clear waters of the Houat-Hoëdic archipelago lend themselves to sea kayaking, diving and shore fishing; ask the Baie de Quiberon tourist office for the season's operators.
