Ushant (Ouessant)

Its black and white bands have swept the Iroise Sea since 1863: one of the world's most powerful lighthouses houses the Lighthouse and Beacon Museum at its base.

Two traditional houses tell of old Ushant life: painted furniture made from shipwreck timber, the island's matriarchal society and the proella ritual.

The world's smallest sheep breed grazes free on the moors. All around, the Iroise Sea — France's first marine biosphere reserve — shelters seals and dolphins.
