No need to rent a car: cars and bikes are banned on Gulangyu, and Xiamen is easy to get around by metro, BRT, taxi or with the DiDi app. For the island, everything goes through the ferries: tickets are issued in your name and your original passport is required. Book ahead in peak season, as places are limited each day.
