The mana whenua of Aotea are Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea, present since the 17th century, with two marae: Kawa and Motairehe. More than 10% of the island was gifted to the Crown in 1984 by farmer Max Burrill, and 150,000 young kauri were replanted between 1976 and 1987. Today the community runs on solar power and practises zero waste.
