Sri Lanka has not one but two rainy seasons, and they do not hit the same coasts. For most of the year, part of the island is dry. The trick is knowing which part.
This guide complements our Sri Lanka guide. It explains how the two monsoons work, what each region offers and which coast to aim for in each month. The periods given are trends: the weather varies from year to year.
🌧️ Two monsoons: how it works
Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, hot all year on the coasts and cooler in the central highlands. What changes from month to month is the rain, brought by two monsoons. The south-west monsoon, from May to September, soaks the south coast, the west coast and the hills. The north-east monsoon, from October or November to February, mainly affects the north and the east coast.
The central mountains act as a barrier: when it rains on one side, the other side is usually drier. That is why there is a coast in season for most of the year. Only October and November, the transition months, are often rainy across the whole country. A monsoon does not mean non-stop rain: it is often showers, but the sea can be rough and some activities, such as diving or boat trips, stop.
🏖️ The south and west coast, December to April
This is the busiest coast, and the easiest to reach from Colombo airport. It strings together the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort and the bays of Unawatuna, Ahangama, Mirissa, Talalla and Tangalle. It has the widest choice of places to stay, from family guesthouses to luxury villas, and plenty of surf spots.
Its season runs from December to April, which is also the time for whale and dolphin trips from Mirissa and for diving at Unawatuna. From May to September, the south-west monsoon makes the sea rougher: the coast is still open, but swimming becomes tricky on some beaches and many sea activities pause.
🌊 The east coast: Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, April to September
When the south is in monsoon, the east coast takes over. Around Trincomalee, the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli have calm water, and diving is possible until the end of October. Further south, Arugam Bay becomes the island's main surf spot.
The season runs from April or May to September. The east coast is less developed than the south, with fewer places to stay, and the journey from Colombo is longer, so it is often combined with the Cultural Triangle on the way. From October or November to February, the north-east monsoon brings rain and many places slow down.
🍃 Tea country and the Cultural Triangle
The highlands around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella are cooler than the coasts. Exposed to the south-west monsoon, they are drier from December to April but can be visited all year: people come for the tea estates, the hiking and the scenic Kandy–Ella train, whose reserved seats are sold on the official railway website (seatreservation.railway.gov.lk).
In the north-central region, the Cultural Triangle brings together Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Lying in the dry zone, it gets less rain than the coasts and can be visited for much of the year; showers are more frequent during the north-east monsoon at the end of the year. Hot-air balloon flights over the Dambulla area run from November to April. In July and August, the great Esala Perahera procession fills Kandy: book early if you want to see it.
📅 Month by month
December to March: the best time for the south coast, the west, the hills and the Cultural Triangle. It is also the busiest period, with higher prices over Christmas and New Year. April: a good in-between month, the south is still fine and the east starts its season.
May to September: head for the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) and the Cultural Triangle; the hills can still be visited, with some showers. July–August: Esala Perahera in Kandy. October and November: a rainy transition almost everywhere, with fewer visitors; plan mostly inland stops and keep some flexibility.
🗺️ Two itineraries by season
December to April, about two weeks: arrive in Colombo, the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa), Kandy, the train to Ella, then down to the south coast to finish between Mirissa, Unawatuna and Galle. This is the classic loop, often with a safari in Yala National Park added.
May to September, about two weeks: arrive in Colombo, the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, then the east coast, Trincomalee for beaches and diving or Arugam Bay for surfing. The Ella hills fit in on the way, with a chance of rain. Either way, many travellers hire a car with a driver: distances look short on the map, but the roads are slow.

🏆 Our verdict
For a first winter trip: the south coast, combined with the Cultural Triangle and the hills, from December to March.
For a summer trip: the east coast, from Trincomalee to Arugam Bay, with the Cultural Triangle and Kandy, perhaps during the Esala Perahera.
In October and November: focus on inland areas and stay flexible: it is the least predictable period, but also the quietest.
