There are no direct flights from Europe to Okinawa: fly nonstop London–Tokyo (British Airways, JAL, ANA), then take a domestic flight to Naha, about 2 h 30 from Tokyo or 2 hours from Osaka. A single ticket protects the connection.

Every boat to the Keramas leaves from the north pier of Tomari port (Tomarin). Allow 15 minutes by taxi, the Yui Rail monorail to Miebashi then a 10-minute walk, or 30 minutes on buses 26 and 99.

Same-day arrival or a night in Naha?
The last boats to the Keramas leave in the afternoon: if your flight lands late, spend a night in Naha and take the morning boat. For Zamami and Aka, tickets are sold at the port on the day (arrive 30 minutes early); Tokashiki boats can be booked online up to two months ahead. On the way back, keep a spare day before your flight, as crossings are cancelled in rough seas. See our boats, our accommodation and our Okinawa guide.
Entry and budget
UK citizens do not need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days; complete immigration and customs online with Visit Japan Web. A one-way boat ticket costs ¥2,200 to ¥3,950 depending on the island and the boat, plus a ¥100 entry tax (already included for Tokashiki). Domestic flights are most expensive during Golden Week (late April–early May) and in mid-August.
When to go?
Late April–early May and October to November for beaches and diving, outside the rainy season (mid-May to late June). Summer is hot and busy, with a typhoon risk from July to October. January to March is humpback whale season.
