From Pulau Blakang Mati to Sentosa
Island-wide

Until 1970, the island was called Pulau Blakang Mati, "the island behind death" in Malay: fishing kampongs, then British forts and barracks from 1878 to 1967, before being renamed Sentosa, "tranquillity". The Sentosa Heritage Trail follows its traces along three waymarked routes.

Before becoming a leisure island, Sentosa was called Pulau Blakang Mati and guarded the entrance to the harbour: British forts, batteries and barracks were built there from 1878. Fort Siloso, Singapore's only preserved coastal fort, and the barracks turned hotels tell this story, as do the island's museums and galleries.
