Waiheke is the territory of the Ngāti Pāoa iwi; their marae, Piritahi, is in Oneroa. The island was formerly called Te Motu-arai-roa, “the long sheltered island”. Europeans repaired their whaling ships here from the 1790s; a shipyard opened at Man O' War Bay in 1836, followed by logging and manganese mining. In May 2025, ten kiwi were released on the Te Matuku peninsula.
