How long does it take to get to the Chausey Islands?

Chausey has no airport or roads: you travel to Granville in Normandy, then take a boat from the ferry terminal to Grande Île, 17 km offshore. From the UK, the simplest options are a Brittany Ferries crossing to Saint-Malo, Cherbourg or Caen, or a flight to Rennes, followed by a drive to Granville. France is 1 hour ahead of the UK.

By fast boat or traditional sailing ship

Vedettes Jolie France runs the regular service all year, with more sailings in summer; arrive 45 minutes before departure. From April to October, you can also sail on the bisquine La Granvillaise or other traditional boats. From Jersey, Manche Îles Express sails to Granville in season.

Entry formalities and arrival

UK travellers need a valid passport; under the EU Entry/Exit System, your details are recorded on arrival. There are no cars or cash machines on Chausey: bring cash, water and good shoes. Accommodation is very limited, so most visitors come for the day. See also our pages on car rental and where to stay on the Chausey Islands.

When to go and what it costs

From April to September there are more sailings and better weather; spring tides are spectacular, but check tide times before walking on the foreshore. The crossing costs a few tens of euros return; book in summer and on spring weekends.
