Fernando de Noronha is a volcanic archipelago in the South Atlantic, about 350 km off the Brazilian coast, attached to the state of Pernambuco. Twenty-one islands, only one inhabited: 18.4 km² of land within 26 km² of archipelago, about 3,100 residents, and the status of UNESCO World Heritage since 2001. It is one of the few destinations where visitor numbers are capped and where access is charged for — two things to factor in before booking.
A marine national park before it is a beach
Most of the archipelago is a marine national park, and that changes everything: the most famous beaches — Praia do Sancho, regularly voted the most beautiful in the world, Baía dos Porcos, Praia do Sueste — are inside the protected perimeter, with timed access, limited numbers and strict rules.
The reward is visible underwater: turtles a few metres from the shore at Sueste, spinner dolphins coming into the bay of the same name every morning, and diving visibility among the best in the Atlantic.
The island comes down to 7.5 km of road — the BR-363, from the port to Sueste. Everything else is dirt track, which is why the buggy is the normal vehicle here and the car the exception.
Two compulsory taxes, not to be confused
The TPA, the environmental preservation tax, is charged per day of presence and is paid online before arrival or at the airport. In 2026: 105.79 R$ for one day, 520.50 R$ for five, 901.36 R$ for ten. Children under five are exempt.
The marine national park ticket (ICMBio) is separate. It is theoretically optional, but without it you cannot enter Sancho, Baía dos Porcos, Sueste or the associated trails — that is, most of what you come for. It costs 384 R$ for a foreign visitor and is valid for 10 consecutive days, from a start date of your choosing.
Added to the airfare and pousada rates, these two lines make Noronha an expensive destination. Better to build them in from the start than to discover them at the airport counter.
Two seasons, two uses
The dry season, fromAugust to December, offers the calmest sea and the best diving visibility — the August–October window is the one divers seek most.
From January to March, the northerly swell turns Cacimba do Padre into a well-known surf spot, but the water is murkier and showers more frequent. The Brazilian high season runs from October to February: that is when tickets and pousadas cost most.
An island you have to earn a little
Everything arrives by boat or plane, and it shows on the bill: reckon on 100 to 180 R$ per main course at the good restaurants, around 65 R$ at the everyday places. The fuel is rationed and the station closes at 7 pm.
Accommodation is spread over four areas: the Vila dos Remédios to be within walking distance of the restaurants, Floresta Velha and Floresta Nova for quiet and the large pousadas, and Praia da Conceição to sleep by the water.
There is no regular sea link with the mainland: flying is the only way in, from Recife, Natal or Fortaleza.

Do you need a visa?
No for European Union nationals: entry is free for a tourist stay of under 90 days, within a limit of 90 days in any 180-day period. The passport must be valid for six months beyond the return date and an onward ticket out of Brazil is required at boarding.

How do you get there?
By air only. Azul and Gol serve FEN airport from Recife (about 1 hr) and Natal (under 2 hrs), with Fortaleza added in season. From Europe, TAP flies Lisbon to Recife non-stop. There is no boat link.
What is there to see?
The Praia do Sancho and the Baía dos Porcos for the scenery, the Praia do Sueste to swim with the turtles, the Mirante dos Golfinhos at first light for the dolphins. On land, the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios fort of 1737 and the base of Projeto Tamar, which is free to enter.
